How to pay

If you apply online, the payment section of your online account has the instructions. If you apply as a group, 1 person can pay and upload 1 receipt for everyone, or each person can pay separately and upload their own receipt.Source: canada.ca, How to apply (opens in a new tab)

If you apply on paper, pay only when you are ready to submit your application, then print the receipt and include it with your application. If you send more than 1 application at the same time, you can pay all the fees together (1 receipt) or separately.

If you don't pay, or only pay part of the fee, IRCC returns your application. It processes your application only after you pay the full amount and include the receipt when you send the application again.

Refunds

How do you know if processing has started? When you receive an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) letter or email, IRCC has started processing your application. You get the AOR after IRCC receives your application and checks that it is complete.Source: canada.ca, How to apply (opens in a new tab)

IRCC issues the refund to the person named in the "Payer Information" section of the receipt.

  • If IRCC doesn't approve your application: it refunds the right of citizenship fee ($123 as of November 1, 2026) for an adult application only. There is no refund for a minor's application.Source: canada.ca, How to apply (opens in a new tab)Source: IRCC, Fee list (opens in a new tab)
  • If you withdraw your application, or IRCC closes it because you didn't send documents it asked for or didn't attend a required event (test, interview, hearing or ceremony): you get a refund. IRCC contacts you before it closes your application.Source: canada.ca, How to apply (opens in a new tab)
  • How much: before IRCC starts processing your application, it refunds the full amount you paid. After it starts processing, it refunds only the right of citizenship fee for an adult, and nothing for a minor.
  • If you pay more than the required fee, IRCC automatically refunds the extra amount. You don't need to contact IRCC to get it.

Other costs to know about

If IRCC asks you to submit your fingerprints for your citizenship application, you must pay the fees to have your fingerprints taken.Source: canada.ca, After you apply (opens in a new tab)

If you fail the test 3 times, IRCC invites you to a hearing. If you fail the hearing, IRCC refuses your application, and you need to reapply and pay the fees again if you still want to become a citizen.Source: canada.ca, Test results and next steps (opens in a new tab)
