Chapter 1 of 11 · study notes
Applying for Citizenship
This short chapter explains what happens after you apply, how to use the study guide to prepare, and what happens at the citizenship ceremony.
Applying
When you apply, officials check your status, confirm you are not prohibited from applying, and make sure you meet the requirements.
How to prepare
To prepare, study this guide and practise answering questions about Canada with help from a friend or family member.
You can also ask a local school, school board, college, community centre or immigrant-services organization about citizenship classes.
Every test question is based on subject areas set out in the Citizenship Regulations, and the study guide contains all the information you need.
The citizenship ceremony
If you pass and meet the other requirements, you get a document called a Notice to Appear to Take the Oath of Citizenship. It gives the date, time and place of your ceremony.
During the ceremony you take the Oath of Citizenship, sign the oath form, and are handed your Canadian Citizenship Certificate.
You are encouraged to bring family and friends to celebrate with you.
Reading isn't the same as remembering.
